Portraits 2
Portraits 2 is the second iteration of the highly-succesful Portraits group show held by Africa First X Gordon in summer 2022. This time we feature a tighter selection of 5 emerging artists, 2 of which are new to the program:
Daniel Gyekyi Gyan (b. 1992, Ghana), Tafadzwa Tega (b. 1985, Zimbabwe), Tafadzwa Masudi (b. 1988, Zimbabwe), Prudence Chimutuwah (b. 1989, Zimbabwe), Kutlo Mabua (b. 1992, Botswana)
The artists were all born between 1985-1995, a time where the historic misconceptions and stereotyping of black people were being rapidly turned around, thanks to black leaders emerged in all walks of life: Politics to Sports, Cinema and Fashion, and of course Contemporary Art.
The people depicted in these paintings are serene and self-indulgent, proud of their beauty and social status. They gaze directly at the viewer from a position of strength and self-confidence.
