Portraits

Paul Ayihawu (b. 1995, Nigeria), Moufouli Bello (b. 1987, Benin), Daniel Gyekyi Gyan (b. 1992, Ghana), Qhamanande Maswana ( b. 1991, South Africa), Cinthia Sifa Mulanga (b. 1987, DRC), Nirit Takele (b. 1985, Ethiopia), Tafadzwa Tega (b. 1985, Zimbabwe), Godwin Champs Namuyimba (b.1989, Uganda)

The young artists in this “Portraits” show were all born between 1985-1995. They grew up at a time where the historic misconceptions and stereotyping of black people were being rapidly turned around, to the point where today, in many fields (but particularly in sports, art and fashion) black people are the global leaders.

The portraits depicted in this exhibition show black people in serene poses of self-indulgence. Indulgence in their own beauty and social status, be it indoors or outside, they seem to connect directly with the viewer from a position of pride and self-confidence.
