Held on January 31, 2019 at 18:30 at the MFA program of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Tel Aviv, the talk was attended by a room full of artists, staff and guests.
Kabiru spoke about his practice and residency in Israel in an interview moderated by Danielle Gorodenzik, Africa First Content Manager and independent curator, and was followed by a lively Q&A session.
Kabiru creates intricate sculptural works that push the boundaries of conventional craftsmanship, sculpture, photography, design, and fashion. He is best known for creating eye wear "C-Stunners" that are made from found objects, which he then photographs himself wearing. His works have been shown world-wide and are included in numerous public and private collections such as the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) where a room is dedicated to his work and is on permanent display in Cape Town, South Africa; and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, among others.
