Inaugural 2019 Africa First Art Prize

We are honored to announce the Africa First Art Prize as a new collaboration with the Africa's leading art fair, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF). Participating exhibitors of ICTAF 2019 are invited to nominate one exhibited artist. Applications are open to emerging and mid-career artists from Africa and/or of African heritage.


The prize includes a fully paid two-month residency in Israel during 2019 and a solo exhibition at the VIP lounge of ICTAF in February 2020. The winner will be chosen by a carefully selected panel of leading art world practitioners with complimentary experiences, each with a unique record of success and influence in their respective field. The winning artist will be announced at a ceremony during ICTAF 2019.

  • Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Artist

  • Simon de Pury, Former Chief Auctioneer, Collector & DJ

  • Serge Tiroche, Collector and founder of Africa First

  • Marie-Ann Yemsi, Independent Curator & Consultant

The Prize:

  • A two month residency in Israel

  • All expenses covered by Africa First, including return flight, insurance, accommodation, a spacious studio, working materials, local transportation, on the ground assistance as well as a 50 USD per day stipend for the duration of the residency

  • Artists are encouraged to explore the country, interact with the local art scene and produce an innovative body of work influenced by their experience

  • A solo presentation in the ICTAF VIP Lounge in 2020 (works produced during the residency will be shipped to Cape Town) 

  • Two works will be donated to prestigious collections: One to the Norval Foundation and the other to the Africa First collection

Applications should be no more than 10MB in a single PDF and include the following:

  • Representative portfolio of work produced in the past 5 years of at least 10 works and no more than 20

  • A substantial CV with full names, references, addresses and contact details

  • A brief letter of motivation outlining why you wish to join the residency. A synopsis of a proposed project - a plus

  • Incomplete applications will not be reviewed
