About the Exhibition

JD Malat Gallery collaborates with Africa First to support the shared goal of both organisations –  to introduce contemporary and emerging artists, such as Tega Tafadzwa, into the global art ecosystem and intrinsically create visibility and interest for their works. Founded by Serge Tiroche in 2017, Africa First is an ideal/ultimate platform for the collaboration of incandescent artists, collectors, and curators, promoting a strong social agenda and aiming to create long-term historical significance for the artists.

RWENDO – WHICH MEANS JOURNEY consists of fifteen new paintings which reflect the journeys of people, who experienced the difficulties of relocation. Originally from Zimbabwe, Tafadzwa pursued his artistic career in 2008, when he moved to Cape Town, South Africa. As a foreigner looking for a brighter future, the artist faced the challenges of integrating into the local environment, which inspired him to start painting fellow immigrants and to tell the stories of their journeys filled with obstacles. Aiming at creating canvases that honour the African diaspora and their lives, Tafadzwa captures their powerful personalities with his paintbrush.
